Shadehouse Project
This
project was commenced in November 1991 by the Framlingham Aboriginal
Trust of Purnim with funding provided by the Department of Conservation
and Natural Resources, Portland, and the Australian National Parks and
Wildlife Service. Coleraine's business houses and Friends of The Points
from around Australia donated plants.
Friends of The Points, Australian Conservation Volunteers and Portland Aluminium worked together to install power and a watering system complete with mist sprinklers and a circulating system and waterfall to create a rainforest environment. Funding for the water system and power was supplied by Alcoa Landcare.
As part of an accredited landscaping course, students have since enhanced and significantly enlarged the water feature in latter years.
The salt content of the water renders it unsuitable for overhead misting, thus not fully achieving the aim of an Australian rainforest environment. Steps to overcome this are in place so that this environment can be justifiably restored.
